Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
