Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
