The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
