Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
