European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
