Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been won on hard surfaces

A revitalized Medvedev claimed his initial championship for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The athlete, a former world number one, has had a challenging year, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in particular - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually separating with former trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This marks the player's first title after the Rome competition and first on a hard surface from that period of 2023.

Victory also indicates he has secured 21 titles at 21 distinct competitions.

"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my children at once, so to secure a title is particularly special," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in tribute of my child Victoria, because the first title I got when my child my daughter was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had lost his last six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.

His retrieving play style and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had led commentators to doubt if his ability to play at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and compete assertively, supported by an enhanced serving game.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the final five points to gain the advantage.

Both players exchanged break points in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to push for a third set.

He saved four initial break points in a tight third set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Appropriately, Medvedev earned victory with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a return after a lengthy match.
