Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
